As the manufacturer of all of Greg Pease's blends, we have the opportunity to realize some of the most loved pipe tobaccos on the market. From classic mixtures like Haddo's Delight to unique flakes like Sixpence, every day we work to bring really great recipes to life and out to customers all over the globe. Of course, like anything in the pipe tobacco world, there are some projects that just get us really, really excited. Collaborating with Gawith, Hoggarth, & Co to do another run of one of Pease's most celebrated mixtures ever? Yeah, that's definitely been one of them. In case you hadn't heard, we just finished another run of Stonehenge Flake.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with the famed blend, Stonehenge Flake was first created as a unique collaboration project between the late John Gawith from Gawith Hoggarth & Co. and Gregory Pease back in the day. Since that initial, limited run of approximately 1500 tins, Stonehenge Flake has developed what we call "holy grail" status — coveted treasures among pipe smokers' cellars all around the globe.
True to the original recipe, this run follows the exact same formula and protocol John and Greg developed all those years ago. This traditional, no-nonsense blend combines bright flue-cured and sun-cured leaf from Brazil, Zimbabwe, and Malawi with just a touch of Burley and a good bit of Perique for added body and spice. After blending all those quality components together, the mixture is steamed and hot-pressed into blocks and allowed to mature, marrying all the flavors together for a more uniform, consistent flavor in the bowl. Then it's sliced up into thin, delicate flakes and trimmed them down to 2" lengths for easy packing.
Much like Penzance and other heralded blends, its reputation precedes it. This is what Pease blends are all about — taking high quality varietals and presenting them in a way that complements the natural flavor of the leaf with deep complexity and elegance. We're all finished up on our end, and we'll have this latest run back out to retailers starting Friday, June 23rd. So get excited! We sure as hell are.
